Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor

Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) is an
experienced contractor within the highly specialised field of design
and construction of power plants. The company’s experience
covers all aspects of the process: Design, construction,
renovation, operation, maintenance, education, and funding.

BWSC not only plays the initial role as a developer, but also takes
on the responsibility of constructing and delivering turnkey power
plants and delivering services within operation and maintenance
during the entire lifetime of the power plant.

The Challenge

Highly Intensive 3D CAD Software

When Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor (BWSC) constructs new power plants – projects which typically last approx. two years and cost up to 150,000 EUR – the PDMS 3D CAD software is essential for constructing and calculating.

In the past, the work processes in relation to the PDMS application used
to be a challenge: ”The application was extremely slow, as all the computations were demanding. For this reason BWSC had to synchronise revised design drawings at night and send CDs with drawings to all involved parties. Provided with the critical task of constructing power plants, it is important that all parties at any stage of the project are working with the same version of a given drawing. On an on-going basis, we had to ensure that all parties had the same data,” IT Manager Jens Andersen explains.

BWSC wanted a solution that could enable our employees at the construction sites as well as our collaborators to get online access to the latest updated data – having one single set of data centrally located in the datacenter and online access to these from all relevant locations at any time. In this way, we could save time and money and at the same time safeguard against the risk associated with circulating multiple versions of drawings.

  • Central solution
  • Increased performance
  • Online access for all relevant end-users
  • Saving time
  • Increased quality and data integrity
  • Minimising risk of errors
  • Flexible use of global resources
  • Improved workflows

The Solution

After several years of search for a method and service to enable online access to BWSC’s 3D CAD drawings, Jens Andersen finally found the solution: The Lean-On Cloud Platform. The solution is a uniquely designed ecosystem, enabling fast and central deployment of heavy 3D CAD applications, such as PDMS. The Cloud Platform is based on central access for all users with the option of integrating other offices or subsidiaries into the solution.

“Initially we performed both Proof of Concept and Proof of Context. This gave us clear results: The employees involved in our tests were located in Bulgaria, and the distance was not noticeable at all! Delivery of the graphic intensive application took place as if the employees were located at our head office in Allerød, Denmark, also being the location of our data.”

The solution meant a significant performance increase, hence an increase of productivity and also a new way of working: ”All parties – at the construction sites, at our headquarter, at our collaborators’ locations around the world and even employees from their home PC, can access the same data. This means that we eliminate the unproductive work of copying drawings and checking if everybody uses the same version of a given drawing. In doing so, we save time and avoid errors,” Jens Andersen explains. In the capacity of IT Manager he has had the satisfaction of finding a solution that at the same time makes end users happy and supports the business in the best way possible.

The Potential

A new way of using global resources

For Jens Andersen the new solution is excellent, as it simplifies the construction of new power plants significantly: The construction of a new power plant is commenced by placing a trailer on the site. Inside the trailer, BWSC connects to power and internet, following with the setup of the IT equipment. In this way, the construction site always has online access to the latest updated construction drawings.

Besides from that, the above solution provides brand new perspectives for the future: “With a solution that delivers online access anywhere in the long-term perspective, BWSC is able to use our global resources in completely new ways, working in several time zones allowing us to act with total flexibility. We are not quite there yet, but we will be,” concludes Jens Andersen, IT Manager at Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractors.
